Early Life
Harald's half brother Olaf, was exiled because of a revolt. Years later when Harald heard of his half brothers return to Norway he gathered an army to meet him. After greeting his half brother they went on to fight the battle of Sicklestead. Harald sided with Oaf in the battle to try to get Olaf back onto the Norwegian throne. The battle was lost, Olaf died, and Harald was wounded but lived. Harald managed to escape with the aid of Rognvald Brusason who later became the Earl of Orkney. He was brought to a remote farm in eastern Norway where he stayed while his wounds healed.
He then went to Kievan Rus, more specifically the town of Staraya Ladoga. Where he was welcomed by prince Yaroslav who severely needed military leaders and thus made Harald a captain in his army.
