When king Edward the Confessor died many people came to become the new king (he wanted William the Conqueror to be king and he did). Harald Hardrada and Harold Godwinson were both people who strived to become king. They battle at Stamford Bridge to decide who would be king. Harald brought a fleet of over 300 ship containing hundreds of soldiers. However, this was no match to Harold's army. Harold's army split Harald's, into two groups which put the them at a huge disadvantage. Soon Harald's entire army was wiped out along with Harald himself. When the battle was over the the surviving Norwegians surrendered and negotiated a truce with Harold. According to the truce the survivors were to be leg go if they pledged to never attack England again. Among the survivors was Harald's son, Olaf III. The Norwegians had lost so many that out of the three hundred ships that brought the army to England only twenty four were needed to bring the survivors home.
