Back To Norway
On Harald Hardrada’s journey back to Norway he learned of the defeat of Anund Jacob the Swedish king who was also trying to take the Danish throne. He too was exiled and Harald met up with him. The current king of Norway was Magnus “the good” who was an uncertain son of Olaf. Harald and Anund then began their assault on Denmark when the combined armies raided the Danish coast. This was not a real attack. It was just to impress the people living there to show them Magnus gave them no protection so they would support Harald. However, this tactic failed, the people did not turn on Magnus.
Magnus knew after this attack their target would be Norway. So he moved all of his forces into Norway. However, his advisors told him not to fight his uncle. So a truce was made in which Harald would rule Norway jointly with Magnus. However, Harald needed to give half his gold to the nearly bankrupt Magnus. The co-rule lasted less than a year because of the death of Magnus. During the co-rule both had different courts that were separate from one another.
